Relativistic Effects in Extrasolar Planetary Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper considers general relativistic (GR) effects in currently observed extrasolar planetary systems. Although GR corrections are small, they can compete with secular interactions in these systems and thereby play an important role. Specifically, some of the observed multiple planet systems are close to secular resonance, where the dynamics is extremely sensitive to GR corrections, and these systems can be used as laboratories to test general relativity. For the three-planet solar system Upsilon Andromedae, secular interaction theory implies an 80% probability of finding the system with its observed orbital elements if GR is correct, compared with only a 2% probability in the absence of GR. In the future, tighter constraints can be obtained with increased temporal coverage. This essay received “Honorable Mention” in the 2006 Essay Competition of the Gravity Research Foundation

Effects of Secular Interactions in Extrasolar Planetary Systems
This paper studies the effects of dynamical interactions among the planets in observed extrasolar planetary systems, including hypothetical additional bodies, with a focus on secular perturbations. These interactions cause the eccentricities of the planets to explore a distribution of values over time scales that are long compared to observational time baselines, but short compared to the age o...
متن کاملThe Relativistic Factor in the Orbital Dynamics of Point Masses
There is a growing population of relativistically relevant minor bodies in the Solar System and a growing population of massive extrasolar planets with orbits very close to the central star where relativistic effects should have some signature. Our purpose is to review how general relativity affects the orbital dynamics of the planetary systems and to define a suitable relativistic correction f...
متن کاملObserving Extrasolar Planetary Systems with ALMA
We address in this white paper the ability of ALMA to observe extrasolar planetary systems (in various stages of formation). The observation of extrasolar planetary systems is thought to be one of the most important science drivers for ALMA. As such, we should have some idea of what the capabilities might be in this regard.
متن کاملThe Possible Belts for Extrasolar Planetary Systems
More than 100 extrasolar planets have been discovered since 1990s. Different from the solar system, these planets’ orbital eccentricities cover a huge range from 0 to 0.7. Incidently, the first Kuiper Belt Object was discovered in 1992. Thus, an interesting and important question will be whether extrasolar planetary systems could have structures like Kuiper Belt or asteroid belt. We investigate...
متن کاملThe role of cluster evolution in disrupting planetary systems and disks: the Kozai mechanism
We examine the effects of dynamical evolution in clusters on planetary systems or protoplanetary disks orbiting the components of binary stars. In particular, we look for evidence that the companions of host stars of planetary systems or disks could have their inclination angles raised from zero to between the threshold angles (39.23◦ and 140.77◦) that can induce the Kozai mechanism. We find th...
